The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost a promising linebacker to a Super Bowl contender.

On Tuesday, September 2nd,

Outside linebacker Jamir Jones was waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers on February 28 to make room on the roster for fellow linebacker Derrek Tuszka. According to reports, the Steelers hoped to re-sign Jones to their practice squad if he cleared waivers. The Los Angeles Rams, on the other hand, foiled that plan by claiming Jones.

Now, the 23-year-old Notre Dame product will have the chance to take his career to the next level with the Rams (3-0), who remain one of the leading Super Bowl contenders in the NFC after a 34-24 home win over the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Los Angeles claimed Jones “because he has put some good stuff on tape,” according to Greg Beachum of the Associated Press, who covers the Rams. Jones did put up some impressive numbers during the preseason, with four sacks and six quarterback hits.

Jamir Jones’ NFL Career

However, Jones has had a much smaller impact since the regular season began. Jones started his first NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday due to injuries to starting outside linebackers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. According to Pro Football Reference, he played 36 defensive snaps and 29 special teams snaps in Pittsburgh’s first three games, recording three solo tackles and a quarterback hit. Jones signed with the Steelers in early April after working out at Notre Dame’s 2021 Pro Day, which was attended by GM Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin. When he was signed as an undrafted free agent by Houston in the spring of 2020, he got his first taste of the NFL, but his time with the Texans was brief.

“Last year, I spent about a week and a half in Houston. I was quarantined for the first week. Then I stayed there for about three days. During a media scrum in early September, he recalled, “We did weight room workouts and then they cut me.”

That said, he was fortunate to get another chance to shine at Notre Dame’s recent Pro Day, which allowed him to avoid working in retail.
