Sean McVay Reacts To The Cam Akers Injury News

The Los Angeles Rams were dealt a crushing blow this Tuesday afternoon, as NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero announced that running back Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the 2021 season.

Akers, 22, was selected by Los Angeles in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He finished his rookie season with 625 rushing yards, 123 receiving yards and three total touchdowns.

Rams head coach Sean McVay shared his initial reaction to the injury news during an appearance on ESPN LA 710. Of course, McVay feels terrible for Akers right now.

“You just feel so bad for him because he’s doing everything right. He’s working hard,” McVay said. “It’s a bummer but you put your arm around him. You support him.”

Even though Los Angeles is now down its leading rusher, the team doesn’t plan on adding another running back to its roster. At least that’s what ESPN insider Adam Schefter is reporting.

“Rams don’t have any immediate plans to pursue a free-agent running back,” Schefter wrote. “They believe in Darrell Henderson, like last year’s undrafted free agent RB Xavier Jones and also drafted RB Jake Funk in the seventh round this year. For now, they’re standing pat, but could revisit later.”

Henderson was a productive player in the Rams’ backfield last year, as he had 138 carries for 624 yards and five touchdowns.

Los Angeles’ plans at running back could change depending on how training camp goes.
