Ryan Day Sums Up His Mindset With Loss To Oregon

No one expected Ohio State to lose to Oregon last weekend. So what happened? It’s not like Ryan Day and the Buckeyes were glancing over the marquee non-conference clash.

Day met with reporters on Tuesday to discuss the Buckeyes’ stunning loss to the Ducks last Saturday. He had plenty to talk about, especially because of Ohio State’s horrendous defensive effort against Oregon’s RPO offense, led by offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead.

Oregon quarterback Anthony Brown did enough through the air, but it was the Ducks’ rushing attack that gave the Buckeyes fits. Brown and running backs CJ Verdell and Travis Dye combined for 269 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. It’s been a while since a team dominated Ohio State in the trenches like Oregon did.

It’s not like the Buckeyes weren’t prepared for a fight, though. Day admitted on Tuesday that Ohio State had the Oregon game “circled for a long time.”

“This loss doesn’t sit well at all,” Day said. “We wanted to win this game, and we had it circled for a long time, so we’re very disappointed.”

Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has been on the receiving end of harsh criticism stemming from the Oregon game. He might be on the hot seat.

Ryan Day met with Coombs over the weekend to tell him the obvious: Ohio State’s defense isn’t meeting his “expectation.”

Another poor defensive performance by the Buckeyes could mean the end for Coombs, who looked puzzled against Oregon’s RPO offense.

Ohio State takes on Tulsa this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
