Report: An Interesting Waiver Is Coming To College Football

A wave of changes has hit college football in 2021. Another significant change could take place as soon as next month.

Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated reported on Tuesday that NCAA officials are planning to pass a one-year waiver which would allow teams to sign a recruiting class up to 32 players. What’s the catch? It will depend on the number of outgoing players who hit the transfer portal.

The transfer portal has seen an unprecedented number of players enter these past few years. The more players which transfer from a program, the more a signing class can expand up to a limit of a 32-player signing class. In other words, if seven players enter the transfer portal, teams can sign up to 32 players in a recruiting cycle.

Dellenger has the latest on the upcoming change:

“Officials are set to pass a 1-year waiver next month to immediately expand the 25-man FB signing limit, sources tell @SINow,” Dellenger reported on Twitter. “Coaches can replace up to 7 players who leave for the portal. Max signing # would be 32 (25+7).”

This is a much-needed change. The transfer portal is a big reason why.

Per Dellenger, officials plan to evaluate how the one-year waiver plays out. Depending on their observations, a permanent plan could then take place starting next year.

This is yet another significant change taking place in the midst of the rapidly-changing college football landscape.
