Rangnick and Woodward could both be offered advisory positions at Man Utd next summer.
United is in advanced talks with the former coach of Stuttgart, Schalke and RB Leipzig about the successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the season, sources said Ias the club continues to pursue other permanent management options, with Mauricio Pochettino as the front runner who will take over the helm next summer.
Ralf Rangnick becomes interim coach of Manchester United, but interests him only because of what is on the table in the long term.
However, I It has also been said that Rangnick would only consider such an arrangement if he had a role for him after joining a permanent manager elsewhere in the club structure.
The only stumbling block are the negotiations about Rangnick’s exit from Lokomotiv Moscow, where he only took up a position as sports and development manager in July.
Rangnick advocates the possibility of changing the club structure in relation to the academy structure or the way it works on the transfer market. Together with coaches, he revolutionized RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig in his role as football director and developed Leipzig from a regional football team in the 4th division to a top team in the Bundesliga.
Solskjaer and some members of the United hierarchy actually visited Salzburg and Leipzig during Rangnick’s tenure as Head of Sports and Development at Red Bull – where he oversaw development of all of the brand’s clubs around the world – to see how they work.
They were impressed by the philosophy he was able to convey with his high-intensity playing style, which he insisted on in Leipzig and which stood the test of time. Rangnick has a decisive influence on how, among others, Jürgen Klopp, Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel train their teams.
United’s football director John Murtough has had Rangnick on his radar for a while. I understands from several meetings with the 63-year-old. The role beyond this season is to work with and advise Murtough. Rangnick, however, is likely to be very hands-on.
Speaking to Rangnick on Monday as well as several other candidates including Ernesto Valverde, United were most impressed with what Rangnick had to say and changed their offer to include the advisory aspect.
Such an appointment should be a welcome relief to United fans who have wished for a figure other than Ed Woodward to oversee operations in the boardroom, as the majority of their rivals have more successful hierarchical structures.
As reported by I Earlier this week, Woodward had planned to leave by the end of the year, but he could stay to secure an advisory role at the club, with his departure date now set for April next.
Rangnick is a sincere character who is not afraid to shake things up and tell what it is like. He has been known to quit clubs when he hasn’t got his own way. Given the mess United created for themselves and put so much hope in Solskjaer without appointing a football director by this year, such an approach is welcomed by many.
The German’s record as a coach is not to be despised – successive promotions with Hoffenheim, second in the Bundesliga with Schalke as well as the leadership of Leipzig under the top three – but he is a footballing director roles in which Rangnick has excelled and of which United is so excited.
