Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly swung and missed with an attempted postgame interview joke on ABC on Sunday night.
Following Notre Dame’s overtime victory at Florida State, Kelly attempted to pay tribute to former football coach John McKay. However, the joke didn’t really land.
Kelly explained that he wasn’t very happy with his team’s execution in the 41-38 victory at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
“I’m in favor of execution. Maybe our whole team should be executed,” Kelly said.

Kelly, though, was simply trying to reference an old quote from John McKay. The former USC and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach used to say “I’m in favor of it” when asked about his team’s execution.
The original quote came from John McKay, legendary coach of the creamsicle Bucs:
“What do you think of your team’s execution, coach?” asked a reporter. McKay replied, “I’m in favor of it.”

Still, Kelly’s comments have gone viral on social media.
Former professional golfer turned sports media personality Paige Spiranac was among the many to weigh in with a joke of their own.

Kelly, meanwhile, addressed his comments in a later press conference.
“It’s an old John McKay quote,” Kelly told reporters. “I was kidding. It was tongue-in-cheek. It wasn’t funny? … I was talking and making a joke about it. It was taken serious? Are you people crazy?”
