Ohio State Basketball Announces Major Non-Conference Game

On Thursday afternoon, Ohio State basketball fans received some intriguing news – the Buckeyes scheduled a major non-conference opponent.

Ohio State announced it will face off against Xavier at the Gavitt Games later this fall. Following the announcement, Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann released a statement.

“What the Gavitt Games have done at the start of the college basketball season, and honoring the late great Dan Gavitt, has been tremendous for our game,” Holtmann said. “It has provided a number of really great matchups and this year is no exception. Xavier is a tremendous program with a rich history and passionate fan base. Playing against a good, well-coached team in that environment early in the season will be great for our 2021-22 team.”

This is just the fifth meeting between the two in-state programs.

In the early-to-mid 1930’s, Ohio State won each of the first two meetings, which were both played at Xavier. The two teams met again 50 years later was Xavier won an NIT meeting between the two teams in 1984.

The most recent, and perhaps best, game between the two teams came during the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Ohio State took down Xavier in a thrilling 78-71 overtime win in the second round en route to a runner-up finish.
