NFL Analyst Names The 1 Coach Facing Most Pressure

The Chicago Bears have made the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, but head coach Matt Nagy’s future remains uncertain heading into 2021.

Nagy was hired for his work as an offensive coordinator in Kansas City, but his offenses in with the Bears have been subpar. In the words of NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks, Chicago’s offense has “regressed dramatically” over the last two years.

On Friday, Brooks wrote that Nagy is on the proverbial “hot seat” entering this season.

“The unit’s lackluster output has put the spotlight squarely on Nagy, particularly given the failures of Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles at quarterback,” Brooks said. “The duo’s shortcomings have tarnished Nagy’s reputation as a quarterback developer, fueling speculation that this season could be the coach’s last in Chicago if the Bears don’t flip the script on offense. And Nagy knows it.”

Indeed he does. In a recent interview, Nagy flat out said that the time is now for the Bears’ offense.

“I think what we’ve put together -Ryan Pace has done such an amazing job of building the last three years – this roster that we have, we have a lot of depth,” Nagy said, via NBC Sports Chicago. “And so now to be able to have the time to put together, we feel like we’re going to have a great opportunity offensively to to do what we need to do. The time is now, we know that and we’re looking forward to it.

“You can’t live in the past. And that’s not what we’re going to do. I refuse to allow that to happen. This is a new season, and so we got a fresh start. So let’s see what we can do with it.”

Of course, complicating matters for Nagy and the Bears’ offense is the situation at quarterback. Veteran free agent signing Andy Dalton is the projected starter, with 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields behind him.

It is reasonable to wonder how much firepower an offense can have if Dalton or a rookie (albeit a talented one) is running the show. For Nagy’s sake, hopefully the answer is plenty.
