The New York Jets are bringing in a veteran linebacker to help out on defense.

The Jets have signed veteran linebacker B.J. Goodson, per NFL insider Tom Pelissero. They’re bringing him in on a one-year deal worth up to $2.1 million.

Goodson has played five seasons in the NFL up to this point. He’s had stops with the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers and most recently the Cleveland Browns. Last year in Cleveland, the veteran linebacker had 91 total tackles, two tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks in 14 games. He’s especially good at helping stop the run.

The Jets might insert Goodson into their starting lineup as soon as this week. New York plays the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The Jets were hit hard with the injury bug in their season opener on Sunday.

Mekhi Becton will miss the next four to six weeks because of a dislocated knee cap. Linebackers Jamien Sherwood and Blake Cashman will miss a few weeks with various injuries. Defensive back Lamarcus Joyner is out for the season and punter Braden Mann will miss four to six weeks.

Linebacker was already a position of need before Week 1. It became a necessity following injuries to Sherwood and Cashman. Goodson will play a key role for the Jets defense this season.

The Jets will try and win their first game of the season this Sunday against the New England Patriots.
