Mac Jones Explains Reason For His Nickname At Alabama

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones is apparently a man of many nicknames.

We know that his former teammate Cam Newton used to call Jones “Mac and Cheese.” His offensive coordinator at Alabama, Steve Sarkisian, used to call him “McEnroe.”

During an appearance on “Merloni and Fauria” on WEEI this afternoon, Jones revealed that he had another moniker in college: The Joker.

Unfortunately, the origin for this nickname isn’t nearly as cool as it could have been.

Maybe Jones was “The Joker” in college, but after the summer the former Crimson Tide star had, no one is laughing about him around the NFL. Jones, the No. 15 overall pick in this year’s draft, beat out Newton to earn the starting quarterback role as a rookie.

Not since Drew Bledsoe in 1993 has a rookie quarterback entered a season in New England with this much fanfare and responsibility. We’ll find out soon if Jones is up to the task.
