Jon Gruden Shares Injury Update For QB Marcus Mariota

The Las Vegas Raiders unleashed Marcus Mariota on a designed quarterback run in their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately, the former No. 2 pick suffered an injury on that run that forced him to miss the rest of the game.

Mariota’s only carry on Monday night went for 31 yards, as the middle of the field was wide-open for him to exploit. He injured his quad when falling hard on the turf, though.

On Tuesday afternoon, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden had an update on Mariota’s status. Gruden said Mariota re-injured a quad injury that bothered him in the preseason.

“We lost a big part of our offense,” Gruden told reporters. “Hopefully it’s not going to linger on.”

There’s no timetable for Mariota’s recovery at this time. Of course, the Raiders are hoping that he won’t have to miss much time because of this injury.

Gruden’s comment about Mariota being a “big part” of the Raiders’ offense makes you think the former Oregon quarterback would’ve been utilized a lot more in Week 1 had he not re-injured his quad.

Luckily for the Raiders, the offense was able to make enough plays down the stretch to defeat the Ravens in overtime.

If Mariota has to miss an extended period of time, Gruden will have to find other ways to expand the Raiders’ playbook.
