Is Black Friday Racist? University of Florida students are calling for the “offensive” name to be changed.

Students were interviewed in response to the 2019 Chicago Tribune article entitled “Black Friday should be renamed so it does not depict” discrimination and profiling of blacks.

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA: University of Florida students reportedly told a Campus Reform reporter that they wanted to change the name of Black Friday – a slang term for the Friday after Thanksgiving – because it sounded racist and “offensive”. One student said to Ophelie Jacobson, “Honestly, I’m ready to rename this,” but when they learned the story behind it, several changed their minds.

According to reports, in response to the 2019 Chicago Tribune article entitled, “Talk of the County: Black Friday should be renamed so it wasn’t questioned ‘discriminatory and profiling against blacks’”, the students were reportedly interviewed. An anonymous author’s opinion piece read: “The name of the shopping day after Thanksgiving should not be referred to by the name of a nationality. Black Friday should be public holiday shopping day, spending day, charge card day, green backs or anything other than black that discriminates against and distinguishes blacks. “
