Former NFL GM Has Surprising Take On USC Job

USC is in need of a head coach after firing Clay Helton on Monday. A former NFL GM doesn’t think the Trojans will have a tough time filling the vacancy with a quality candidate.

Following the firing of Helton, former NFL GM Michael Lombardi took to Twitter to discuss the job opening. In doing so, he made a bold claim that the USC head coach gig is better than “2/3 of the NFL jobs.”

“USC is a better job than 2/3 of the NFL jobs. Fact,” Lombardi said on Twitter. “You are the GM, the player personnel director and coach.”

That may seem like a stretch, but the Trojans do have a couple of things going for them.

Their own backyard is filled with four- and five-star recruits. They’re a blue-blood full of rich tradition. Oh, and the head coach has much more control over the program than most other coaching gigs in college football do.

On the flipside, there’s plenty of advantages to coaching in the NFL. You don’t have to recruit. You have unlimited resources. The NFL Draft presents intriguing opportunities each and every year, as well.

Few, if any, would pick USC over the NFL. Pete Carroll left for the Seattle Seahawks. Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian were shown the exit. And don’t forget about Urban Meyer, who probably could have had the gig if he had made a simple phone call before taking over in Jacksonville.

USC is a coveted position. But the NFL is a far more attractive option, regardless of location.
