Quarterback Drew Brees retired from the NFL and left the New Orleans Saints without a clear plan of succession at his position. With Jameis Winston set to battle Taysom Hill in training camp for the starting job, Brees gave his thoughts on the upcoming quarterback competition.
Speaking to Mike Tirico for Football Morning in America, Brees would only speak glowingly of his two ex-teammates. He wouldn’t predict who would win outright but predicted that both players would see time on the field.
Though he did hint that Taysom Hill is going to get a larger role with the team than last year regardless. Brees believes that even if Winston wins the job, Tayson will see “a lot of action at quarterback.”
“Both guys have such a love for the game… and you can see it in the way they play,” Brees said. “Taysom has an infectious love for the game. There is not a guy who is more respected for that and for what he brings to the team. Jameis was such a joy to be around. He also loves the game and loves to work at it. You can tell that football consumes his thoughts. He wants to be a great player and continue to improve. Whatever happens, in terms of whoever is the starter, I do think there is a scenario where both of them are playing. If Jameis is the starter I think Taysom is seeing a lot of action at quarterback, maybe even moreso than he did with me.”

Drew Brees missed four starts with an injury last season and head coach Sean Payton gave the starts to Taysom Hill. Hill went on to go 3-1 as a starter, completing 73-percent of his passes for 928 yards and four touchdowns while adding several more touchdowns on the ground.
Winston, on the other hand, barely played and had just 11 passes in spot duty this past year. But he boasts significantly more starting experience, with five prior years as a starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Saints are a team designed to win right now, and if they can just find the right quarterback, they’ll be back to the playoffs in no time.
Who do you pick to win the Saints quarterback battle between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill?
