After a stellar freshman season at Marquette, former four-star forward Dawson Garcia entered the NCAA transfer portal this past June. It didn’t take long for him to choose his destination.
On Thursday, Stadium college basketball insider Jeff Goodman reported that Garcia is joining the North Carolina Tar Heels. Garcia is one of the biggest pickups for first-year head coach Hubert Davis since taking over the job a few months ago.
With the addition of Dawson Garcia, the Tar Heels now have five recruits for their 2021 recruiting class. Garcia joins Dontrez Styles, D’Marco Dunn and transfers Brady Manek and Justin McKoy as new Chapel Hill attendees.
North Carolina fans are absolutely delighted to be bringing Garcia into the fold. Praise is pouring in for Davis, who has now recruited his first legit starting power forward to his 2021-22 squad.

Coming out of high school in 2020, Garcia was the No. 37 prospect in the country per 247Sports. He was the No. 4 power forward in the country and the No. 2 prospect from the state of Minnesota.
As a freshman for the Golden Eagles, Garcia averaged 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds while starting all 27 games. But the team finished 13-14 and missed the NCAA Tournament, firing head coach Steve Wojciechowski afterwards.
Marquette has since hired former Texas and VCU head coach Shaka Smart as their new head coach. But that apparently wasn’t enough to convince Garcia to stay.
Now Garcia joins a team that’s almost assured of reaching the NCAA Tournament. With pro ambitions, he probably made the right choice.
