Celtics Reportedly Hiring Former NBA Point Guard

New Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka is adding a former NBA point guard and fellow Portland native to his coaching staff.

According to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman, Udoka is hiring University of the Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire as an assistant coach. Stoudamire has been in charge of the program at Pacific since 2016, compiling a 71-77 overall record.

Stoudamire was named the WCC Coach of the Year in 2019-20, when he led the Tigers to a 23-10 mark. A 13-year NBA veteran, Stoudamire was an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies from 2009-11 before embarking on a career coaching in college.

The 47-year-old Stoudamire and Udoka are both from Portland and have known each other for many years.

Udoka was hired as Boston’s new head coach on June 23. He took over for Brad Stevens, who moved into a front office role following the retirement of longtime general manager and team president Danny Ainge.

Udoka had been an NBA assistant since 2012, working with the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers.
