Breaking: Rams Star Tore His Achilles While Training

The Los Angeles Rams‘ championship hopes took a major hit this week. On Tuesday, it was announced that star running back Cam Akers suffered a serious injury while training and will have to miss the 2021 season.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, Akers suffered a torn Achilles. An injury of this magnitude should keep him on the shelf for several months.

The timing of this injury is just brutal for the Rams. Training camp is a week away and now the team must rely on another tailback to lead their backfield.

Akers, 22, was selected by Los Angeles in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. His rookie season didn’t start off as well as fans thought it would, but he played a huge role down the stretch for Sean McVay’s offense.

In 13 games last season, Akers had 145 carries for 625 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also had 11 receptions for 123 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Losing an explosive player like Akers could really hurt the Rams’ offense this season. There really isn’t a player on the roster right now who can just outright replace him.

Darrell Henderson Jr. is listed as the second running back on Los Angeles’ depth chart. He’ll most likely receive the bulk of the carries in training camp.

The Rams could also reach out to a few free agents. Adrian Peterson, Duke Johnson, Dion Lewis, LeSean McCoy and Le’Veon Bell remain unsigned with training camp just around the corner.
