What will Bill Belichick do with Stephon Gilmore?
One of the most important questions surrounding the New England Patriots is
. Gilmore drew interest from NFL teams, but no deal was struck. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year is now out with an injury. The Patriots had a serious offer from the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports.
That puts things on hold for now.
The Saints Tried to Sign Stephon Gilmore
According to a report from NFL.com, the Saints tried to sign Stephon Gilmore. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the New Orleans Saints attempted to sign Stephon Gilmore of the New England Patriots before striking a deal with the Houston Texans for Bradley Roby. The Saints could have used Roby, Fuller, or Gilmore on Sunday when they were thrashed 26-7 by the Carolina Panthers, according to Sigler. The Saints gave up 305 passing yards to Sam Darnold, a quarterback who hadn’t surpassed that total in a game in nearly two years. Meanwhile, the Patriots’ defense was in fine form on Sunday, dismantling Darnold’s former team and the rookie quarterback drafted to replace him.
This raises an additional question. Do the Patriots still require Stephon Gilmore?
is the short answer to that question. Although, after watching the Patriots’ defense against the Jets on Sunday, it’s easy to believe that the unit could get by without him. It’s important to remember, though, that the Patriots’ defense racked up four interceptions and four sacks against a rookie quarterback in his second regular-season game.
While it would be unfair to diminish the Patriots’ defensive brilliance, it would be unreasonable to expect the unit to be this dominant every week. Gilmore is still one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL if he stays healthy and in shape. Bringing him back in that condition will only benefit the Patriots’ defense and team as a whole.
