Xiaomi’s update trick: Get smartphone updates sooner by switching regions

I have been using Xiaomi smartphones for years. I started with the Mi 6 and also worked my way through daily drivers like the Mi Mix 2, Mi Note 10 or Mi 9 over the years. I have also been using the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro for some time now and am very satisfied except for one point – Xiaomi’s update policy could be better. However, there is at least one little trick that shovels premature updates onto the manufacturer’s devices in many cases in Germany.

For example, I was annoyed a few weeks ago that the Mi 10 Pro lagged far behind in security patches and had not even received an update in 2021. Currently, the Mi 11 is also back in front of me for coverage, and I have not yet had my turn at the distribution of MIUI 12.5 either. The wait can make you impatient. It was pointed out to me in the comments that this would not necessarily have to be the case.

The “trick” that leads to faster updates on Xiaomi smartphones is so simple that it is surprising:

Go to the “Settings” section.
Now open the subsection “More settings”.
Here you go to the “Region” section.
Now set it to “India”.
Switch back to the main settings menu,
Now call up “About the phone”.
Click on the “MIUI version”.
Check here for updates.

For me, it has already worked reproducibly on 4 devices: When searching with the region “Germany” set, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro (Caschy’s test here), Mi 11 (my test here), Mi 11 Lite (my test here) and Mi 11 Ultra (my test here) did not appear to have an update. However, the aforementioned switch to the India region then conjured up an update. Most recently, this also worked with MIUI 12.5 on the Xiaomi Mi 11.

It is of course possible that the game also works with a region other than India, you are welcome to experiment and give me feedback. By the way, changing the language is not necessary for this trick. Of course you will get the EU firmware despite the region change. After the update search, you can also directly reset your region.

The only thing you have to accept: Some hidden apps pop up in the Indian region setting that are not available in Europe, such as Mi Pay and Mi Credit. However, they are hidden as soon as you switch back to Germany.

So, if you own a Xiaomi smartphone and have not received any updates for a long time or are waiting for a new update that has not arrived yet – just change the region and let yourself be surprised!
