South Dakota vs Cal Poly Preview
Last week, the Coyotes pounded the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 34-7, rebounding from a tight season-opening loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. Wesley Eliodor set the tone by returning the opening kickoff 49 yards into Lumberjacks territory, setting up a touchdown drive. In the third quarter, the wideout added a 28-yard return. The Coyotes have only allowed two goals in their first two games. In their 17-14 victory over the Coyotes, the Jayhawks rushed for only 82 yards on 41 attempts. Nielson’s defense is now tasked with stopping Cal Poly head coach Beau Baldwin’s offense, which includes a former Cal Bears offensive coordinator with a reputation for putting together prolific passing attacks. Baldwin coached the Eastern Washington Eagles to an FCS national championship in 2010, his third season as their head coach in a nine-year span; that team ranked seventh in the FCS in passing yards per game.
Quarterback Spencer Brasch, who played for Baldwin at Cal in 2019 and joined the Mustangs this year, has completed 57 passes for the Mustangs. As the team started 1-1, he completed 7 percent of his passes for 530 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.
