Union in crisis – Söder cancels appearance with Laschet.
On the weekend, the Junge Union invites you to its Germany Day in Münster. In addition to CDU boss Laschet, there are also Jens Spahn and Friedrich Merz. CSU boss Söder, on the other hand, has now canceled.
Contrary to the original announcement, CSU boss Markus Söder will not be a guest at the Junge Union (JU) Germany Day in Münster. A party spokesman confirmed this on Thursday. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” had previously reported.
Instead, Söder will attend a CSU basic conference in Bavaria on Saturday. Numerous CDU top politicians have announced themselves to the three-day meeting of the Union’s youngsters, which begins on Friday – including CDU leader Armin Laschet, Union faction leader Ralph Brinkhaus, Health Minister Jens Spahn and economic expert Friedrich Merz.
JU boss Tilman Kuban told the Rheinische Post: “I regret the cancellation.” At the time, the Junge Union spoke out in favor of Markus Söder as candidate for chancellor. “So it would have been right if he had faced the discussion about the reasons for the poor outcome in the Bundestag election and the differences in dealings between the two parties at the joint youth organization of the CDU and CSU.”
Söder had lost out in the power struggle with Laschet for the Union’s candidacy for chancellor. During the election campaign, there were repeated critical tones in the direction of the CDU boss. The Union achieved a historically poor result in the federal election. The CDU now wants to re-elect the entire federal executive committee at a special party conference. It remains to be seen whether this will take place in December or in January.
