FIFA airlifts 100 refugees from Kabul, including female soccer players.
FIFA helped evacuate nearly 100 refugees from Afghanistan, including female soccer players. The independent one understands.
The group, which consists mainly of women and girls, left Kabul on Thursday on a flight to Doha.
In the rescue plan, FIFA was supported by the Qatari government, which worked closely with them to secure the escape.
A source close to the operation said: “The group has now landed in Doha and is happy to be safe.
“This has been a long negotiation since August to get the group out.”
It is assumed that FIFA will continue to try to ensure safe passage for more players and their families from Afghanistan, which came under Taliban control in August.
It is not yet clear where the group, which does not consist exclusively of footballers, is going from Doha.
More to come …
