At least 46 people were killed in a fire and dozens were injured in a high-rise condominium in southern Taiwan on Wednesday night, local officials said.
The “very intense” flames began around 3 am on Thursday, swallowing the entire Kaohsiung city building and destroying many floors.
At least 11 bodies were sent directly to the morgue, Fire Chief Li Ching-hsiu told reporters on the scene. Another 14 who showed no signs of life were of the 55 who were taken to the hospital. In Taiwan, formal confirmation of death can only be done at the hospital.
