San Antonio – Each San Antonio Wheelchair Spurs player stands out in his own way, but now with the addition of Afghanistan’s National Paralympic Champion Mohammad Bilalmil Batzai.
“He will be a great addition because he has the ability to improve my defenses and attacks,” said Willy Jackson, his new coach, an international basketball player.
Jackson said Mirbat Zai “brings a lot of power for what he had to experience and makes him a very smart and strong individual.”
The day after the suicide bombing outside Kabul Airport, Mirbat Zai and his wife Humaira Sediki waited for fear of further explosions before they could leave the country.
He said each was working with an international aid group to help athletes with disabilities and targeted the Taliban.
His wife, who lost her childhood when the bomb exploded outside the house, worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross, which sponsored the National Wheelchair Basketball Team in Afghanistan.
He worked with Free to Run, an organization that supports female athletes in conflict areas around the world.
Mirbat Zai said he had already raised an emotional turning point in their lives, and his wife’s mother died the day they learned they were expecting their first child.
A week later, he said they arrived in the United States.
However, Mirbat Zai, who developed polio on one leg as a boy, had to abandon his customized wheelchair, which had played in many international matches.
“I’m very fine in that wheelchair,” said Mirbat Zai. “I can go and I can go fast.”
He said the wheelchair he is currently using is too big and too expensive to operate.
“A custom wheelchair that fits perfectly with Mohammad will look like a new tennis shoe,” said coach Jackson. “You could take his skill set to another level.”
The problem, according to Jackson, is that custom wheelchairs can cost up to $ 7,000.
“We try to raise money, and if we can get help in the community, we greatly welcome it,” Jackson said.
Meanwhile, Mirbat Zai, who holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and business administration, and his wife, who specializes in artificial limbs, are both looking for a place to live that is accessible by work and wheelchair.
