Tarrant County, Texas — Every 4 Years Texas Monthly And BBQ Editor Daniel Vaughn Release Texas Top 50 BBQ Places List.
The final list was published in 2017. The new list will be announced on Monday, October 18, 2021.
“It’s not easy to (narrow down to 50) because barbecue is as booming as it is now. I’m not envious of (Bourne’s) work,” said Brandon Hurtado of Hurtado Barbecue.
“(Creating a list) is something everyone thinks about at least once, right?” Said Trevor Sales of Brix BBQ. “It’s a lie to say that you haven’t lost sleep in the last couple of weeks.”
“Daniel Bourne has been here many times. I’m confident, but there’s always something like” what if “in your head,” said Derek Alan’s Texas BBQ. Derek Kladington said.
Hurtado BBQ in Arlington, Brix BBQ in Fort Worth, and Derek Allan all opened after the final Texas Monthly Top 50 list was released.
In 2017, Texas Monthly ranked Snow BBQ first in Lexington. Franklin BBQ in Austin, second. The third is the Cattleack Barbecue in Dallas.
However, the Dallas / Fort Worth barbecue scene has changed since 2017.
“DFW didn’t have many representatives other than Cattleack, but that will change soon,” says Hurtado. “It feels like Goldee’s, Derek Allan, Heim Barbecue, Hutchins, Dayne’s. Things will change.”
Hartado said he opened a Mexican or Texas barbecue barbecue joint in Arlington in February 2020 with a “Mexico-style spin.” Plans are underway to open a second location in Little Elm.
“It’s more than just a food blog,” says Hurtado on the Top 50 list. “This is a real certified list in our hearts, formed by people who eat, sleep and breathe barbecue like us.”
Meanwhile, Brix Barbeque, named after the sales dog, plans to open its first “Brix and mortar” on S. Main Street in Fort Worth this spring. They are currently run on an Airstream trailer called SmokeStream, opposite HopFusion AleWorks.

According to sales, his “daily work” is the sale of utility cables and wire products. And he learned a lot from the Fort Worth barbecue community.
“Chris (Magallanes) and Ernie (Morales) at Panther City BBQ are just around the corner. They are great people. They essentially taught me how to smoke brisket. We have a lot of respect for people, “said Sales. “If they aren’t on the list (similar to Dayne’s), I’ll be confused because they’re doing great things.”
Just below SmokeStream is Derek Allan’s Texas Barbecue, which opened in 2019.
“Oh, that would mean a lot. It’s been my goal since the food trailer,” said Crudgington. “I’ve been studying Texas Monthly and Danielborn, and what he’s been doing for years. It was great to see him for the first time. I still have a picture of him.”
Kladington serves all Wagyu beef, breakfast is open early and Brisket biscuits are served.
“It’s the people who really provide everything every week to create a list. It’s the best place in the country,” says Crudgington.
