The National Hockey League began the 2021-22 season on Tuesday. It’s also the first year of the $ 1 billion media rights package by ESPN and Turner Sports.
According to the network, NHL’s ESPN doubleheader averaged 884,000 viewers on Tuesday, and Turner attracted approximately 669,500 viewers on Wednesday’s national broadcast. Both numbers are above the NHL average for the opening round of the last two seasons.
In ESPN’s first game, Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2. According to ESPN, which uses metrics from research firm Nielsen, the average number of viewers for the game on Tuesday was 984,000, peaking at over 1 million.
The Disney-owned network added a 2021 contest between Penguins and Colorado Avalanche in October 2001, surpassing the last highly rated NHL opener. The 2001 opener attracted 927,000 viewers.
ESPN also debuted the Seattle Kraken expansion franchise, which lost 4-3 to the Golden Knights in Las Vegas. The average number of viewers of the game was 782,000, and the peak number of viewers exceeded 1 million. According to the network, streaming metrics from ESPN + are not included in viewing statistics.
By comparison, NHL’s first game of the 2020-21 season opener gained an average of 972,000 viewers on NBC’s sports network. The contest featured the Philadelphia Flyers and Penguins and was NBCSN’s most watched regular season game.
Other triple-header games last season included Chicago Blackhawks vs Lightning and Avalanche vs St. Louis Bruce. The average total number of viewers for television broadcasts was 774,000, up from 600,000 last season.

According to TNT, the average audience for the second contest, when Avalanche defeated the Blackhawks 4-2, was 522,000.
In terms of advertising, metric company EDO estimated that the automotive category was leading the advertising spending of NHL openers this season at 15.4%. Restaurants accounted for 12.9% and insurance accounted for 11.9% of advertising costs. EDO has added Apple’s commercial-driven search engagement. This is a metric used by companies to measure a brand’s online search activity within minutes of the TV ad airing.
