‘Get up! ‘The Pope prays for Lebanon to recover.

Rome – Pope Francis told the Prime Minister of Lebanon Thursday that he was hoping that God would help Lebanon “stand up” and recover. , In poverty.

Prime Minister Najib Mikati personally met Francis for about 20 minutes and tiled a 19th-century Beirut church that killed 216 people and injured more than 6,000 in the harbor explosion in August 2020. I gave it to him.

At the end of the audience, Francis advised the delegations of Mikati and Lebanon to observe the moment of silence and prayer, the Vatican said.

Lebanon’s two-year economic collapse has left tens of thousands of jobs lost and the pound lost more than 90% of its value, rooted in decades of corruption and mismanagement. The international community states that it will only support small countries if they have implemented extensive reforms and tackled widespread corruption.

Francis referred to the problem in his remarks to Mikati and the Lebanese delegation, assuring them his prayer and efforts to “build a common effort to help Lebanon stand up.”

Francisco referred to a passage in the Bible where Jesus took the girl’s hand on the bed of death and said, “Get up.”

“God picks up Lebanon and tells it.’Get up!’” Vatican quoted Francis as saying.

At Mikati’s meeting with the Vatican Secretary of State, the Vatican statement said the meeting was about the hope that “justice, necessary reforms, and support from the international community will help solve the problem.”

The Mikati administration, formed on September 10, has been paralyzed for several weeks and was unable to meet due to deep divisions over the investigation into the port bombing and diplomatic conflicts with the Gulf Arab countries.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese pound continued to fall, hitting new lows this week amid tremendous inflation and a surge in poverty. Lebanon’s spiral financial crisis began in late 2019 and worsened rapidly, exacerbated by port explosions and pandemics.

The Mikati administration has not met since mid-October after a Hezbollah-backed minister called for the removal of the chief investigator and threatened to boycott the cabinet meeting until their demands were met. This has led to the current paralysis.
