Cardinal fires Mike Shield over “philosophical differences”.

Just a week after St. Louis lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Wild Card game, Cardinals fired manager Mike Shildt on Thursday about philosophical differences within the organization.

Cardinals President John Mozeliak said the firing was “a recent appearance,” but refused to expand what he called a “philosophical difference.” He pointed out that Shield was heading towards the final year of his contract, but that wasn’t the only reason for the farewell.

Shield tentatively replaced current Royals manager Mike Matheny in August 2018 and took over as a full-time employee next season. The Cardinals won 91 games that season, winning NL Manager Shildt of the year and advancing to the NL Championship Series before being selected for the National League.

The Cardinals lost to the wild card game, reaching 30-28 during the 2020 season when the pandemic was shortened. After that, he reached the wild card game again this season using the 17 consecutive wins of the franchise record.
