UN (Reuters)-The UN General Assembly on Thursday is based in Geneva, USA, more than three years after the Trump administration resigned from a 47-member organization because of what is called chronic prejudice and lack of Israel. Was elected to the Human Rights Council. Of reform.

The United States, which was not opposed, won 168 votes in a secret ballot by 193 lawmakers. It will begin its three-year term on January 1st – fighting Washington against Beijing and Moscow, which began their council term this year.

US President Joe Biden took office in January, with human rights at the heart of his foreign policy, and his administration did not hesitate to criticize China over Hong Kong, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Taiwan and call on Russia.

However, Reuters reviews of Biden’s records to date have shown that concerns about human rights in other countries have been set aside several times in support of national security priorities and involvement with foreign powers. ..

“The United States has the opportunity to show how serious the Biden administration is about making human rights the center of domestic and foreign policy,” said Luis Charbonault, UN Director of Human Rights Watch. “There have been so many failures so far that they should use their time in the council to promote human rights between friends and enemies as well.”

UN Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Washington would initially focus on “what can be achieved in urgently needed situations such as Afghanistan, Burma, China, Ethiopia, Syria and Yemen.”

“Our goal is clear: to stand on the side of human rights advocates and speak out against human rights abuses and abuse,” she said in a statement.

U.S. Senator Jim Risch, a top Republican member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says he will rejoin what he called a “defective body” because Democrat Biden’s focus is on Israel. Condemned the decision.

“The United States should not lend its legitimacy to organizations that include perpetrators of human rights abuses such as China, Venezuela and Cuba,” he said in a statement.

Human Rights Council candidates are elected by geographical groups to secure their representatives. On Thursday, there was no competitive race to elect 13 new members and re-election 5 members. Members may not serve more than one consecutive term.

The General Assembly also elected Kazakhstan, Gambia, Benin, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Paraguay, Honduras, Luxemburg, Finland, Montenegro and Lithuania on Thursday, and re-elected Cameroon, Eritrea, Somalia, India and Argentina.

The United States received the second lowest number of votes, surpassing only Eritrea, which received 144 votes.
