San Antonio – Guillermo Garza, owner of Guillermo’s restaurant at McCullough, says things are improving a bit and the business is recovering for the holidays.
“In the situation four months ago, there was definitely an improvement,” he said.
But it comes at a cost. Food costs soared and Garza had to raise wages to keep staff.
“We had to do. How well do you pay for that salary increase? You give it to your customers,” he said.
These changes are being seen across the industry, according to Kelsey Ericsson Strufert, Vice President of Government Relations and Advocacy for the Texas Restaurant Association.
“For most restaurants, the holiday season is the most important time of the year. Many of them make a year-round income during the holiday season,” says Streufert.
Streufert encourages people looking for holiday gifts and ways to help small businesses to use gift cards from local restaurants.
“Some recent data we’ve done concludes that 62% of adults want a restaurant, gift card, or holiday gift,” she said. “Gift cards and other merchandise and holiday gifts are a great way to do this because they are not affected by supply chain shortages or labor shortages.”
