A former partner of the murdered Chicago police officer Ella French was welcomed by a celebrating hero when she left the rehab facility on Thursday. He has recovered from work injuries over the past two months.

Carlos Janes Jr., 39, lost his eyes after being partially paralyzed by a shooting on August 7 during a regular transportation stop that killed a 29-year-old Frenchman.

Outside of the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, Chicago’s rehabilitation center, a large number of applicants, including family members, police officers, and medical personnel, cheered and applauded Yanez Jr.

Some people put up a homemade sign with the words “Carlos Strong” and posted a photo of the officer, while others wore bracelets and T-shirts in honor of Janes Jr.

The injured policeman left the facility in a wheelchair, pressed his hand against his heart with a sign of gratitude, flashed a thumbs-up sign, and kissed many of his supporters when Mariachi’s live band and bag piper serenade him. CBS Chicago reported that it blew.

“Thanks to all my family and friends for all their support,” he said.

Yanez Jr. picked out a colleague who rushed him to the hospital after the shooting to save his life, a medical worker who treated his injury, and a rehab facility staff who helped him recover.

“I feel like my heart is bursting,” said Nora Laporta, Yane’s Jr.’s aunt. “He is very positive about him.”

Yanez has a long way to go to recovery, and her aunt reveals that there are still bullets left on her neck that the doctor couldn’t get rid of.

The 39-year-old continues his rehab journey at an outpatient facility.

His father, Carlos Janez Sr., said he would stay in a “private place” until he found a permanent wheelchair-accessible home.

The GoFundMe campaign, launched by Yanez Jr.’s sister, has raised over $ 366,000 in donations as of Thursday.

On August 7, Janez Jr. and French pulled the car for an expired plate on 63rd Street and Bell Avenue when a car passenger fired, killed a female officer and seriously injured her partner.

A 21-year-old Monty Morgan, suspected of shooting, was shot in the abdomen by a third officer. He was arrested and charged with first-class murder and attempted murder by police officers.

His brother, 22-year-old Eric Morgan, who the prosecution said was driving a car, was also arrested. He faces gun charges and obstruction of the judiciary.

Both were held in Cook County Jail without bail.

A third man accused of acting as a straw buyer to buy a gun used for shooting is facing federal gun accusations.

The death of the French was the first deadly shooting of a Chicago police officer in a job since 2018, and the first female police officer in 33 years was shot deadly in the job.
