Taipei (Reuters)-A fire broke out in a house in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, killing 46 people and injuring 41, the government said Thursday.
A 40-year-old building in Yancheng District, Kaohsiung, had a fire in the early morning and was extinguished around dawn.
The Kaohsiung fire department said in a statement that it was able to confirm 46 deaths after completing the search for the building.
Mayor Chen Heater said that part of the building was abandoned because it used to have a restaurant, a karaoke lounge and a movie theater.
The government is investigating the cause, such as whether it is due to arson.
